When it comes to bridal gowns, there are so many different styles and silhouettes fit for any bride-to-be. From glitzy ballgowns to modern sheaths there’s no wrong way to dress for your special day, but one style you might not have considered is a wrap wedding dress. Ranu Coleman, chief marketing officer of Azazie, shares that this contemporary choice is perfect for any soon-to-be-wed searching for an effortless look. “Wrap wedding dresses are not only comfortable but extremely flattering for all body types,” she explains. “They accentuate the waist and create the illusion of an hourglass shape.”

Traditionally, a wrap style dress describes a gown that features a front closure with one side wrapped over the other. The two sides are secured with buttons/snaps or a wrap tie that fastens at the back or the side, creating a V-neckline that elongates the torso and highlights curves. While there are still some true wraps, nowadays you’ll often find faux wrap options (where the sides don’t actually separate or come untied) or dresses with slits and seams that give a wrap illusion.

Whether you wear a true or faux wrap, what makes the style so alluring is its versatility. “The endless amount of options when choosing this type of dress makes the style timeless and easy to fit into different aesthetics,” Coleman says. “For a more boho bride you could have a wrap wedding gown with flowy sleeves and lace detailing, or if you are a modern bride, a simplistic silk wrap dress would be perfect for a sleek look.”

What to Look for in a Wrap Wedding Dress

Wrap wedding dresses are great for brides who value comfort on their big day. While this versatile style comes in many different aesthetics, they typically lean modern and chic, which means clean lines and fewer uncomfortable embellishments. Before selecting a wrap for the special day, Coleman says you need to take some time to really consider the fit of the dress on your body. She suggests looking out for necklines that pull or pucker, extreme draping, ties that don’t secure, and the amount of skin showing. Wraps often have high slits and showcase cleavage, so think about whether or not you’re comfortable with that on your special day. If you have concerns, talk with your seamstress about options. Sewing the two sides together (essentially turning it into a faux wrap), adding some fabric to the bust, or lowering the slit could still give you a wrap look with a little more security.

FAQ

  • The good news is that no matter your venue or wedding day aesthetic, there’s a wrap dress for you. “The wrap dress silhouette is very versatile and can be worn for any season,” Coleman explains. As with any gown, you will want to take note of the fabric and sleeve length to ensure you’re cool and comfortable (or nice and warm) on the special day.

  • You’ll want to consider your venue—and weather—before selecting a true wrap dress. Not only can these come untied, but they can also expose more skin in pesky breezes. Double knot your ties and consider adding a button to ensure the wrap stays shut. You can also have a tailor sew the wrap together, creating a faux wrap but still giving the same tied illusion.

  • The good news is that wrap dresses are typically more simple in design than ballgowns or tulle dresses, which means you can expect them to be slightly more affordable. Ultimately, though, it’s going to be the type of fabric, amount of embellishments, and designer name that determines the final price tag.
